We skyped with a teacher named Nobuko Shinozaki in Japan. She teaches high school and used to teach junior high. The classroom was empty because all the students graduated yesterday and were taking exams. She asked us if we have clubs in school and was quickly assured that we have an extensive variety of clubs. We were shown pictures of students in their uniforms. We told her about our school year and she mentioned how nice it was that we had such a long summer break. There are no advanced classes in Japan, instead students take examinations to gauge their level of learning and are sent to the appropriate high school. We told her about our system of pre-AP and AP courses and how we are in an AP Human Geography courses. Someone asked if she thought students are unequally educated because of the different levels of high school, and she said that she thought the system worked and helped students learn better. She remarked on how strict it was that you have to retake a course if you fail it. We were shown the list of course offerings and many of them are very similar to ours. She inquired about our foreign languages and we told her how we have to take 2 foreign language courses. The boys talking to her assured her that they are very serious about learning a foreign language. Our ethnic diversity at Flower Mound was also explained to her. She asked about our lunch system and whether we buy or bring lunches. We were shown their school uniforms and talked about how we don't have uniforms, we have a dress code. They have school excursions in their school and we discussed those.
